The D.C. Everest health services team collaborates with students, families and community partners to help identify and manage students' health conditions and enhance their participation in the learning environment. We also empower students to effectively manage their chronic health condition by helping them better understand their health needs, acquire the confidence to self advocate for their needs, and feel competent about their abilities.

When to Keep Your Child Home Due to Illness

In order to provide our students and staff with a healthy learning environment, D.C. Everest is providing the following guidelines to assist families in determining whether their student should remain home.

Families should monitor their students on a daily basis for signs of illness. Students who are ill should not attend school in person.

Symptoms and Procedures

Coughs and Colds

Infections are spread when students cough and sneeze, forgetting to cover their nose and mouth.

Your student will be sent home if they have continuous nasal drainage, coughing spells or if symptoms interfere with their ability to learn.
Students may stay at school and/or return to school providing they do not have a fever, nasal drainage is minimal and coughing is less frequent.

Diarrhea

If your student has diarrhea due to illness, and the diarrhea is not due to a chronic health condition, he/she will be sent home.

Notify your doctor if the diarrhea is frequent or accompanied by fever, rash, or general weakness lasting more than 48 hours.
A student with diarrhea needs to stay home until he/she is symptom free for 48 hours.
If the diarrhea is associated with illness, your student should not have diarrhea when they return to school.

Fever

Pink Eye

Allergies, viruses, and/or bacteria can cause pink eye. Pink eye can be highly contagious depending on the cause.

Symptoms are red watery eyes, swelling of the upper and/or lower eyelid, and/or yellow drainage.
Your student will be sent home if the pink eye is accompanied by fever, behavioral changes and/or inability to avoid touching the eye.
Treatment for eye infections vary. Call your doctor, optometrist, or ophthalmologist, to find out if any treatment is needed.

Rash

A rash may be the first sign of an illness.

A doctor should evaluate the skin rash before you send your student to school.
Your student will be sent home if they have a rash that is spreading, open and cannot be covered.
Your student may return to school after seeing a doctor. Send a note from the doctor stating that the rash is not contagious and that your student may be at school.

Strep Throat

Vomiting

If your student vomits due to illness, and the vomiting is not due to a chronic health condition he/she will be sent home.

A student who is vomiting needs to stay home until he/she is symptom free for 24 hours.
Call your doctor if the vomiting continues more than 24 hours, and/or your child is not drinking fluids.
Your student should be able to eat and drink without vomiting before they return to school.

What are Head Lice vs. Nits?

What are head lice?

Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live close to the scalp and feed on blood. They are about the size of a sesame seed with pale, gray bodies.

What are nits?

Nits are lice eggs attached firmly at the base of the hair shaft about 1/4” from the scalp. They are oval shaped, very small (about the size of a knot in thread) and difficult to see. They are frequently found on hair behind the ears and near the back of the neck. Nits are often confused with dandruff, dirt or hair spray droplets, but they do not flick off the scalp like dandruff does.

What are the Symptoms of Head Lice?

Treatment for Head Lice

Use an FDA-approved lice medicine (pediculicide) according to the instructions on the product. Do NOT use a combination shampoo/ conditioner, or conditioner, prior to using lice medicine. Prescription products are also available.
Put on clean clothing after treatment.
Comb hair with a fine-toothed metal nit comb (cannot see through the tines) to remove lice and nits.
Disinfect all combs and brushes before using them again by boiling them in water for 5-10 minutes or soak in 70% Isopropyl alcohol for 1 hour.
Check your child’s hair daily. Manually, or with a fine-toothed metal nit comb, remove nits for 2 weeks following the initial treatment.
Retreat your child with lice medicine 7-10 days after initial treatment. Day 9 is ideal for retreating.
Continue to check your child’s head weekly for at least 4 weeks.

Hats, scarves, pillow cases, bedding, towels and clothing worn or used by the infested person should be washed and dried using hot water and hot air.
Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks.
Lice survive less than 2 days, and nits less than 1 week, if they fall off a person and cannot feed.
Vacuum carpeting, upholstered furniture, and car seats.

D.C. Everest School District Policy Statement

Head lice can be found in every community at all times and are not an indicator of cleanliness or socioeconomic status. Lice are a nuisance, but do not spread disease. According to the CDC, National School Nurses Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, students found to have live head lice may remain in the classroom the remainder of the school day. Students can then go home, be treated with an FDA-approved lice treatment and return to school after appropriate treatment has begun. The D.C. Everest Area School District has developed guidelines or the identification, management and treatment of head lice. It is the responsibility of families to check their students’ heads on a regular basis. If live head lice are found, treatment should be started immediately. Promptly diagnosing and treating lice are the best means of control.

Immunization Requirements for All Grades

Wisconsin state immunization requirements for 2024-2025 school year are listed below. Students need the listed vaccinations by the first day of school.

Vaccinations are important. According to the CDC:

Vaccinations can protect your child from vaccine preventable diseases.
Vaccinations are very safe and effective.
Vaccinations can save your family time and money – reducing extended absences from school and/or work.
Vaccinations protect others – especially infants and preschool students.

DTP/DTaP/DT Vaccine (Kindergarten students): Your child must have one dose of the vaccine after age 4. If your child received all four doses before age 4, a 5th dose is required before Kindergarten.

Tdap Vaccine: One dose of the vaccine is required for students in grades 7 - 12. The vaccine is not required if your child received the Td/Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering grades 7 - 12. Tdap vaccine protects your child from pertussis or whooping cough

MMR Vaccine: Two doses are required for students in grades K - 12. Your child must have the 1st dose of MMR vaccine on or after the first birthday and the 2nd dose before starting kindergarten.

Varicella or Chickenpox Vaccine: Two doses OR a history of chickenpox is required grades K - 12. If your child had chickenpox, see step 2 on the waiver form.

No vaccination needed.
Tell the school health aide that your child had chickenpox Hepatitis B: Three doses are required for all students grades K - 12 Waivers Parents have the option to decline any and/or all immunizations based on personal, religious and/or health reasons. If you choose not to immunize your child, check the appropriate waiver (Step 4) and sign the form

*Meningococcal Vaccine: One dose of Meningococcal vaccine (serogroup A,C,W,Y) is required for students entering 7th grade, and a booster dose is required for students entering 12th grade. Students are assessed for this requirement in 7th grade and 12th grade only. Current Wisconsin students in 8th-11th grade will not be assessed for this requirement until they enter 12th grade. A second dose is not required for students who received their first dose of MenACWY at age 16 years or older.

Waivers

Parents/Guardians do have the option to decline any and/or all immunizations based on personal, religious, and/or health reasons. If you choose not to immunize your child, check the appropriate waiver (Step 4) and sign the form. Immunization waiver forms are available online.

Please contact your student’s doctor or local health department to determine if your student needs additional immunizations. Schedule appointments to receive the immunizations needed or sign a waiver indicating what vaccine(s) you do not want your student to receive. Report the dates of the immunizations to the school health assistant.
